Somehow, a random midnight rant of mine wound up as a published blurb in Science magazine, one of the world's leading scientific publications. At least I was coherent in what I wrote. I had completely forgotten about it when the editors contacted me asking for a mug shot.
For the record, I agree with what I said that night. The entire value of all the major academic publishers' libraries is no more than a couple billion or so, and the journal structure could be maintained for something on the order of a few hundred million a year. The government (or a group thereof) banding together, buying out the publishers, and making all this information open access would be a incredible use of public money.
